Kasselakis to train spotlight on phone tappings and everyday problems, sources say

SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance Stefanos Kasselakis intends to throw his weight behind the latest revelations concerning the phone tapping issue and people's daily problems, main opposition party sources said on Monday.

"After the recent sensational reports in the Greek and foreign media, according to which the nephew and former general secretary of the prime minister - while still occupying this office - was the sender of Predator-infected SMS messages to 11 important figures of public life, new evidence has arisen which shows that the phone tappers also targeted prosecuting officials, such as the former financial prosecutor and current Supreme Court deputy prosecutor Christos Bardakis or the prosecutor responsible for the National Intelligence Service (EYP), Vasiliki Vlachou," the sources said.

These reports fully vindicate the concerns raised by Kasselakis in his meeting with Supreme Court Prosecutor Georgia Adeilini some days ago, the sources noted, while also asserting that "the prime minister seeks to cover up the affair, refusing to give the approval required by law for EYP officials to testify but instead repeatedly targeting institutional officials and undermining the work of independent authorities."

"Whatever they do, the truth about the phone tapping will [out]...and those responsible will be held to account," the sources said, stressing that it was an absolute essential to uncover every aspect of "this dark affair that torpedoes the foundations of the rule of law and poisons political life in the country."

They noted that Kasselakis will use every legal and political means at his disposal to shed light on the affair, continuing to meet judicial and prosecuting authorities, independent authorities and EU bodies. The meeting with opposition PASOK-KINAL leader Nikos Androulakis, himself a victim of the eavesdropping software, on Monday was also taking place in this context, along with the meetings with other party leaders and the prime minister.

At the same moment, they added, "daily life and dealing with the problems of the citizens are constantly the focal point of Stefanos Kasselakis' visits and contacts," with SYRIZA-PA's leader fighting a political battle alongside the citizens and mounting a responsible opposition but also presenting progressive and realistic proposals for dealing with high prices and profiteering, a truly fair taxation system, the defence of the public health system and state education.
