With sunny skies drawing large crowds, the school parade to mark the October 28 national holiday was held in the centre of Athens on Monday in a festive atmosphere.
The city centre had been closed to traffic, while representatives of the political, religious, military and state leadership of the country were in attendance. Accompanied by the Athens Municipality Philharmonic Orchestra, all schools in the city of Athens took part in the parade, each with a flag bearer and five attendants.
The parade was preceded by the playing of the national anthem and the laying of wreaths at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier by, among others, Education, Religion and Sports Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Deputy Attica Governor Christina Kefalogianni and Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.
