The crews of a tanker and a cargo ship were unharmed after the two ships collided early on Tuesday for unknown reasons in the Kafireas Strait, south of Karystos.
The collision of the two ships caused only minor structural damage above the waterline. There was no inflow of water or marine pollution.
The tanker, with a crew of 26 on board, was loaded with crude oil and had departed from Novorossiysk, Russia, bound for Castellon, Spain. The cargo ship had a 22-member crew and had set sail unladen from an Italian port, bound for Costanza, Romania.
Due to bad weather conditions, which made it unsafe to dock at the port of Karystos, the two ships sailed under their own power toward the anchorage of Piraeus, where they are expected to be temporarily prohibited from sailing in order to be inspected.
