The greed of smugglers who exploit the dreams of dozens of miserable people for a better future, by stacking them in floating coffins -for outrageous amounts of money-, combined with the lack of an effective and workable framework for dealing with illegal immigration, turned once again the Aegean into an aquatic grave.
The wreck, which occurred in the early morning hours, 4.5 nautical miles north of Samos in the sea area of Agios Konstantinos, is the repetition of a drama which takes place often and victims are the innocent souls who are lost during the journey of hope.

So far from the location of the wreck were pulled up 22 corpses, among them 4 children.

Initially two corpses of women were found, one by the cruise ship ADAMORA which was passing through the area and the second corps by the coast guard. Immediately, was set a major rescue mission with three boats of the coast guard, one of FRONTEX, three fishing boats, a Super Puma helicopter and a naval vessel.

According to the testimonies of the 39 survivors, 65 immigrants were aboard the boat. The vessel was towed and in one o'clock in the afternoon arrived in the port Malagaris of Samos, where it was lifted by a specialist crane, and when was placed on land the men of the port authority and of the divers club of Samos have recovered 18 corpses from the hold of the vessel.

Three men are hospitalized with hypothermia at the hospital of Samos, while this morning a child was transferred in Athens because of the seriousness of the situation.

The immigrants were from Somalia and Eritrea. The evidence so far suggests that the cause of the wreck was the possible weight shift which caused a tilt in the12 meters boat and the inflow of sea water had overload the vessel.
