Greece: Soup kitchens feed thousands this Christmas
With unemployment running at around 25% and no let-up in the ongoing economic crisis gripping Greece, thousands of Athenians have been forced to visit one of the city’s soup kitchens to get a warm plate of food this holiday season.
Local authorities with the help of volunteers have been distributing around 1,500 meals per day.
One homeless man said the reason he is on the streets is because of “the decisions taken by different governments. For six years I received a disability pension but then they cut it. That’s how I fell into absolute poverty,” he explains.
A recent report published by Eurostat revealed that over 122 million EU citizens were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2013.
Greece ranked poorly with over 35% of the population falling into this category, the third worst among the 28 member states.
