Three persons dead in new migrants boat tragedy south of Crete
The bodies of three migrants have been recovered while 302 have been rescued south of Crete on Friday (03/06/2016) when the wooden sailing boat they were on board started sinking early in the morning.
The sailing boat, which according to sources carried approximately 600 migrants and refugees sent an SOS while sailing in Egypt's waters. The Egyptian informed the Greek authorities and two Coast Guard vessels, five ships that were sailing nearby and a Greek airforce Super Puma helicopter rushed to the area.
The coordination of the huge rescue operation is conducted by the Greek Shipping Ministry operation center.
Most of the resued migrants are on a Norwegian-flagged vessel. The authorities have not decided yet in which port the rescued people will be disembarked.
