Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis "is now celebrating something that had been decided a year before he was elected," SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance spokesman Nassos Iliopoulos said on Saturday.

Commenting on the premier's message over the formal ending of Greece's enhanced surveillance program by its creditors, Iliopoulos described Mitsotakis as "representing the forces that led to Greece's bankruptcy" and someone who "during the entire period of 2015-2019 supported the IMF, (then German Finance Minister Wolfgang) Scheuble and the most extreme of lenders who called for the Greek people's exemplary punishment. He supported those who contiually called for new measures without ever admitting their failures. To the end, he kept asking for a 'support credit line' - in other words, another memorandum."

The main opposition party' spokesman said that "when Syriza left power in 2019, it had left 37 billion euros in public coffers, the country's loan payments were regulated, its economy had had 12 straight quarters of growth, unemployment had dropped by 10%, the minimum wage had been raised, rules were reintroduced in the labor market, and the National Health Service and the social state were provided with real support." Today, however, Iliopoulos said, poverty is on the rise again and for a great number of Greek citizens money runs out every month.

"History will be fair to Mitsotakis, and his name will be high up on the list of those who did not hesitate to harm Greece solely for their personal interests," the Syriza spokesman concluded.
