Iliopoulos: PM responsible for phone tapping, elections the only solution

Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance spokesperson Nassos Iliopoulos on Thursday said that the responsibility for the phone tapping affair lies with the prime minister, adding that the only "solution at the point we have reached is elections", while speaking to SKAI television.

He noted a statement by the new head of Greece's intelligence service that no one can be exempted from surveillance, saying this came in the wake of the government spokesperson's inability to refute a report in the newspaper "Kathimerini" that seven political figures were under surveillance.

The spokesperson, in denying that the government or the prime minister had known of the surveillance, had effectively said that there were two scapegoats - the former head of the service and the prime minister's aide - who would be blamed for everything, Iliopoulos added.

When the plenary discusses the issue on Friday, Iliopoulos said, the prime minister will have to explain the reasons of national security for which the MEP and later opposition party leader Nikos Androulakis was placed under surveillance.

He also strongly criticised the government's policy on the price of energy, accusing it of looting society and giving tax-payers' money to power providers.
