Single-engine aircraft crashes into sea near Heraklion - One killed

A 62-year-old Indonesian national, one of two passengers in a single-engine aircraft that crashed into the sea on Thursday morning for unknown reasons, was pronounced dead on arrival at Venizelio Hospital.

The second passenger, a 32-year-old man from South Africa, was in a good condition, Venizelio Hospital director Konstantinos Terzakis said.

The aircraft crashed into the sea off the coast of Heraklion, shortly after taking off from the city's airport. According to the chief of Heraklion airport Nikos Kazantzakis, the aircraft sent out a distress signal as soon as it took off.

The authorities are conducting an investigation into the reasons for the fatal accident.
