SYRIZA's Spirtzis slams response to video of protestors being hit by police tow truck

"We could say nothing, not one word, and simply show the videos of unprovoked violence by the Hellenic Police...of tow trucks that hit roadside bins and protestors at speed, the arrests of young protestors that simply ran to help the injured..." the main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance party's sector-head for citizen protection, Christos Spirtzis, said on Friday in a comment on videos of police clashing with protestors circulating on the internet.

He slammed the announcement issued by the general police headquarters regarding one incident, in particular, noting that the "criminal action of the tow truck, which passed through protestors at great speed, hitting bins and people standing by, and the leak of lies regarding the supposed reasons of the passing tow truck, are beyond the pale."

Regarding the announcement of an investigation into the incident, Spirtzis questioned whether it was necessary for the leadership of the police and the citizen protection ministry to investigate in order to identify the driver and ascertain that that he was both speeding and showing disregard for human life. He also asked why the specific individual had not been suspended, along with those responsible for "unprovoked attacks" and the "injury of protestors", among them a girl hit by riot police shields and tear gas.

A video shows the driver of a police tow truck weaving its way through protestors and then suddenly accelerating and slamming into two roadside bins blocking the truck's path at great speed, knocking down at least one man standing behind one of the bins.
