Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, in a statement on Thursday, expressed its deepest concern "about the cycle of violence with thousands of deaths in Israel and Palestine, the intensifying humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the possible extension of the conflict at the regional level and the possibility of a new refugee crisis."
"The absolutely condemnable attack by Hamas does not legitimise the counterattack launched by Israel in the last few days, which cost the lives of thousands of Palestinian civilians and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza through the blockade of the area," the party said and added:
"The bombing of a hospital in Gaza with hundreds of dead, which - according to media reports - was carried out by the Israeli Air Force was the latest abhorrent event."
SYRIZA-PA underlined that "violence against civilians is in no way tolerated by international law and justice, while the logic of 'revenge' will only further escalate the tension and cause greater losses."
The main opposition stressed the need for international diplomatic initiatives in order to proceed with an immediate ceasefire, the release of those abducted and a return to the diplomatic path, with the aim of a solution of two viable states that coexist peacefully, based on the 1967 borders with the capital of the Palestinian State of East Jerusalem.
Moreover, it called on the Greek government "to support every initiative in this direction and to offer help to victims, refugees and injured, Palestinians and Israelis". "We support and will actively support the struggle for peace and a just and sustainable solution for the Palestinian issue, against the Israeli occupation and any political force that uses violence against civilians to achieve its goals," noted SYRIZA.
