Inflation and price hikes have become policy tools for the New Democracy government, said PASOK-KINAL (Movement for Change) leader Nikos Androulakis on Wednesday, speaking at the OT Forum.

Addressing the forum organized by the financial news publication and online portal Oikonomikos Taxydromos (OT), Androulakis added that all the money coming into the state coffers from the VAT translates to mere relief coupons for the people, referring to the Market Pass or the Fuel pass. He did note, however, that PASOK still votes in favor of those in parliament because although small they do offer some relief in the midst of high prices in foods and general goods.

Still, the need for an immediate reduction of VAT in basic goods remains one of Pasok's standing positions, added Androulakis, and this should be coupled with more intense checks and controls against profiteering.

Overall, the way Greek economy functions is highly problematic, he stressed, while inequalities broaden, and "while public health and education are crumbling."

Commenting on the Europarliament elections in the summer of 2024, Androulakis pointed out that the party "aims to come second with a 15-16% or even higher", he underlined. The ultimate goal is for New Democracy to face a real opponent in Greece's next national elections in four years' time, he said, and be defeated by said opponent.
