PM Mitsotakis visits new stroke unit in University General Hospital "Attikon"

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has visited the University General Hospital "Attikon," which has one of the first of 19 planned enhanced care units for stroke patients to be set up in the National Health System. The prime minister carried out his visit on Thursday.

The newly established enhanced care unit has six beds and the capacity to further increase this number, while it is staffed by specialist neurologists and nurses. It has also launched procedures to obtain certification from the European Stroke Organisation.

Mitsotakis, who was accompanied by Health Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis and Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistokleous, was briefed by the head of the unit, Professor of Neurology Giorgos Tsivgoulis, on its capacity and the innovations in patient care that the unit introduces. Afterwards he spoke with and exchanged wishes with the unit's staff.

According to sources, the aim of the new network of stroke units, which will cover all health districts, is to ensure the prompt, specialised and comprehensive care of patients suffering a stroke. It is estimated that over 7,500 incidents will be treated in the 19 units each year, something that will significantly reduce the death rate and the repercussions of ischaemic events for patients' mobility.
