The main opposition leader exchanged gifts with the dancers and musicians and wished for "peace in the world and solidarity within Greek society," while the event was followed by an impromptu party for those attending.

Kasselakis was due to depart for the United States with his partner, Tyler McBeth, on Sunday to spend the holidays with their families.

Around midnight on Saturday, meanwhile, the main opposition leader paid a surprise visit to the headquarters of the ambulance service EKAB and exchanged wishes with the staff, pledging that SYRIZA will remain at their side "at a time when they are forgotten by the state".

"These are the numbers: 45 ambulances for 5,000,000 population. And where there are ambulances, there are no paramedics," he said, pointing out that ambulance workers will be spending their holidays saving lives and that he wanted to thank them as they were "the heroes of our society".
