SYRIZA sources blame government for climate of 'intense insecurity' as 2024 begins
Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance sources on Thursday said the government was to blame for the "intense insecurity" felt by the citizens as the year drew to a close.
"The year 2024 is being ushered in with new price hikes of up to 4.5 percent in basic goods while tax revenues over the period January-November 2023 are 448 million euros higher than the state budget target. The government has deliberately and steadily subsidised price increases and shuts its eyes to profiteering by chipping away at the income of Greek households," they noted, adding that "while the citizens are called upon to solve the 'riddle' of electricity charges without any real information and without any assurances, on the state's part, of the cost they will be burdened with."
"At the same time, the murder of a young police officer in a Thessaloniki bar right next to the riot police building, is added to a long list of repeated phenomena of extreme violence and crime that have shocked Greek society in recent weeks. The citizens who struggle with intense insecurity over how they will make it through the month are now also afraid for their lives and property," the SYRIZA sources added.
"The government that promised stability and order before the elections has established complete insecurity in all aspects of social and economic activity. The country seems entirely undefended and this is Mr. Mitsotakis' doing," they said.
