Charitsis officially announces formation of 'New Left' group to parliament president
A statement officially announcing the foundation of the newly-formed party "New Left" was delivered to Parliament President Konstantinos Tasoulas on Tuesday by the head of the party's parliamentary group, Alexis Charitsis.
The letter, which was signed by 11 former MPs of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance, will be read out on Wednesday in parliament, before the start of the debate on the draft tax bill.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the leaders of the other parties, as well as Charitsis as leader of the new party's parliamentary group, Dimitris Tzanakopoulos as speaker and Euclid Tsakalotos as parliamentary spokesperson of the New Left are expected to address the parliament.
With the addition of New Left, the 300-member Greek parliament now has nine parliamentary groups, as follows: Ruling New Democracy (ND) 158 seats, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance 36 seats, PASOK 32 seats, Communist Party of Greece (KKE) 21 seats, Elliniki Lysi 12 seats, Spartiates 11 seats, New Left 11 seats, Niki 10 seats, Plefsi Eleftherias 6 seats, while there are also 3 independent deputies.
