The 283 migrants rescued by the Hellenic Coastguard on Sunday, 18 miles south of the island of Gavdos, were on Monday being taken to Agia in Chania, Crete.

The migrants asked for help via the 112 emergency number while sailing on a small boat, which was located by the coastguard, which then launched an operation to approach it. The boat was first taken to the Gavdos harbour, with the assistance of two coastguard vessels and four ships sailing nearby.

The migrants, according to official information obtained by the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, were then put on the ferry boat "Daskalogiannis" and taken to Sfakia port, from where they will be taken in groups to Agia for medical care and briefly hosted until they are transferred to Athens.
