Varvitsiotis, who accompanied Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Brussels, said that the first important step was the common purchase of natural gas, with the goal of covering 15 percent of storage capacity. Additionally, he underlined that ideas for intervening in the mechanism for fixing natural gas prices and uncoupling this from electricity rates - something that Mitsotakis had proposed since March - were now being discussed and becoming European policy.

"I can say I feel proud as a member of the negotiating team that Greece is once again proposing measures to the EU that are finally become European policy," Varvitsiotis said.

The alternate foreign minister pointed out that, with these policies, Europe is sending a clear message to the markets that the "party" in terms of natural gas prices can't continue and to energy providers that Europe dealing with them as a union and not as individual countries.

He noted that there was already a decline of prices from the moment the European Union began incorporating Greece's proposals and estimated that a further lowering of prices is expected after Thursday's EU Summit decisions.
