Doctor setenced for anti-semitic behavior

A 57-year-old doctor accused of putting up an anti-Semitic sign outside his surgery (with the inscription in German 'Jews not welcome') was on Friday sentenced to 16 months imprisonment and a fine of 2,500 euros by a Thessaloniki court.

The neurologist, whose surgery had been given by the Thermaikos municipality, was found guilty of violating laws on racial discrimination in his profession capacity but also for weapons possession after knives and daggers were found in his office. The sentence was suspended after the doctor lodged an appeal.

"I did not put up the damn sign. They put it up while I was absent. I took it down, destroyed it and threw it away," said the accused when testifying. "There should be no discrimination. A doctor should treat all patients," he added according to ANA-MPA

According to witnesses for the prosecution, namely the deputy mayor for social protection and culture at the municipality Ioannis Tsakmakasm who received complaints about the offending signs, the doctor had shown remorse when confronted concerning the sign and apologised, calling it a "momentarily slip" prompted by his anger over an attack by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip a few days that had resulted in the injury of a child.

The accused was released pending appeal.
