Describing the phone tapping scandal as a "Greek Watergate" for which Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is solely responsible, main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance Secretary Rania Svigou warned in an interview with the newspaper "Avghi on Sunday" that all efforts at a cover up will fail and everything will be brought to light.

"As long as the Mitsotakis regime lasts, we are all potential suspects. Reacting to this unprecedented aberration is the duty of every democratic citizen, regardless of their political affiliation," she added, saying that the solution was to hold elections.

"Only a progressive government with Alexis Tsipras as prime minister can restore the institutions and legality," Svigou said, noting that action to address the multifaceted economic, energy and cost-of-living crisis will have a central role in the SYRIZA-PA government programme.

She said the party will use every legitimate means to ensure that the Greek people find out the whole truth, the reasons why the phones of PASOK-KINAL leader Nikos Androulakis and journalist Thanasis Koukakis were tapped and how many other people were also under surveillance.

"This is essential for democracy and for the country. In this direction, there must be an immediate abolition of article 87 of law 4790/21, with which it was forbidden to give notification of the lifting of communications privacy by EYP for reasons of 'national security'," she added.
