PM Mitsotakis on death of Mikhail Gorbachev

"Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, left this life in a country and a continent that were very different from those of his own time. He tried to change a system that had gone beyond its limits, broken up by its weaknesses.

"As a politician, he was identified with the terms 'reconstruction' and 'transparency', which did not bear fruit in his country. He emerged, however, as a figure who made a decisive contribution to peace, international understanding and democratisation," Mitsotakis said.
