Government spokesperson Yiannis Economou, speaking to SKAI TV on Wednesday, said that "the prime minister has announced the elections, fully aligned with his commitment that they will take place at the end of the government's four-year term."
He also noted that past experience in Greece has shown that the political "raw materials" are lacking for the formation of stable and efficient coalition governments.
"The first elections will be crucial, they will be those that show who will rule this country. Our view on how this country should be ruled is clear, firm and does not change. In the elections, the citizens will evaluate policies and proposals for their future, they must think what they will vote for, what they will approve and what they will reject," Economou said.
"The first election on May 21 will be the one that essentially determines who and how the country will be governed and if there is need for a second round, this will ratify and further strengthen the choices of Greek society. We are obviously fully open to any organised debate that may give the people the opportunity to judge, hear and understand the differences and make their choice," he added.
