Tsipras: Mitsotakis admits there was a wiretapping scandal and no security reason for surveillances

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis admitted during the party leaders' debate on Wednesday night that there is a wiretapping scandal, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras said on Thursday.

While at his party's headquarters, the main opposition leader said, "From yesterday's debate of the political leaders we learned some rare news. For the first time Mr. Mitsotakis admitted that there is a wire tapping scandal and there was no national reason for these surveillances".

But if there was no national reason for the surveillances, he asked, "then how is it Mr. Mitsotakis invoked national secrecy in order to cover up the truth at the examining committee," Tsipras asked. He also noted on this point that the prosecutor at the National Intelligence Service (EYP), Vasiliki Vlachou, signed these illegal surveillance but remains in her position. Why has justice not done anything nine months later or pressed charges, the main opposition leader asked.

Tsipras also said that PASOK-KINAL leader Nikos Androulakis' request to have those responsible in this deep state face the consequences is reasonable. But this will never happen with a New Democracy government; only a progressive government can take action. "So, on 22 May let's all assume our responsibilities," he urged.
