Landslide kills woman, destroys section of holiday rental in Crete

The landslide destroyed two apartments, nearly 15 km away from Ierapetra on the way to Sitia, one of which was rented by the woman with her husband and son. The latter were rescued from the debris by the Fire Brigade, but when the woman was found she was dead already.

President of the Ierapetra Hotels Union Giorgos Vardakis expressed his "shock over this tragic event that could not have been foreseen by anyone." He said the region is very popular through the end of October at least, and despite reports that a rock above was dangerous, "the incident did not occur at that point. There was no indication whatsoever of such a threat at the site where the boulder broke." Nearby residents had told him the victim was planning to leave with her family on Sunday, after concluding their holidays, he said.
