"Foreclosures of primary residences were in any case fully liberalised through a political choice and with the responsibility of the Mitsotakis government," main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance sector-chief for economic issues, Effie Achtsioglou, said on Friday. Achtsioglou was commenting on press reports stating that the Supreme Court, by a majority decision, had ruled in favour of allowing debt management companies to proceed with home foreclosures.

"With this court decision - the reasoning of which is not yet known - the borrowers are deprived of a procedural [law] option for blocking, under certain conditions, the execution of a foreclosure," she underlined, noting that "from the beginning we stressed to the government that the issue does not concern a procedural law dispute, but that it should have legislated for the protection of the primary residence."

"Nevertheless, the government insisted on its bankruptcy code, with which it abolished the protection of the primary residence of even our most vulnerable fellow citizens, allowing the funds to carry out foreclosures entirely unchecked, without even the obligation to first propose a settlement to the debtor," she stated.
