"Greece has sent aid to Turkiye from the first moment and will continue to send aid," government spokesperson Yiannis Economou said on Friday in an interview with SKAI TV, referring to the Greek aid after the deadly earthquake in Turkiye.

He underlined that "there was no way for the country to remain inactive in the face of this tragedy. From the first moment, we were at their side. We were among the first countries that sped to assist, beyond the words of support that are self-evident. The men of EMAK are doing a great job there."

Economou added: "We have never had anything to divide us from the Turkish people, we always said that. As we also said loudly that this aggressive rhetoric was not helping. You can't change the laws, you can't change International Law, nor is Greece a country you can bully or cause to panic. Turkish citizens now have the opportunity to see in practice that Greece is not an enemy. Without a doubt, in the face of such a tragedy, you must push everything else to one side. We are talking about a huge humanitarian tragedy."

The services of the foreign ministry are trying in this general chaos to stay constantly informed in order to provide assistance. In any case, however, the country will be there and help at all stages," Economou said.
