Tensions continued to run high on Patission Street in central Athens on Wednesday afternoon, with clashes between police and a group of roughly 35 hood-wearing rioters. One police officer fired warning shots into the air three times to fend off an attack.

The road was closed to traffic in both directions from about 12:10 on Wednesday afternoon, between the junction with Alexandras Avenue up to Agiou Meletiou Street, due to incidents in front of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB).

According to the Hellenic Police, the rioters blocked the road using waste collection bins, which they then set on fire. At approximately 12:30, unidentified assailants attack a passing police patrol car with stones and other objects, damaging the vehicle and prompting a police officer to fire into the air as a warning.

Patission Street remains closed in the lanes leading toward Patissia.
